News for Counselors

School counselors are dedicated and resilient - thank you for your continued efforts to help students remotely. Just as the pandemic has cancelled classes and learning moved from in-person to online, our April professional development meeting with NYSACAC was cancelled but we still offer online training.

This week's ASCA webinar, "Ethical Considerations in Virtual School Counseling" was in such demand that it reached capacity quickly, but it is now available to view at https://videos.schoolcounselor.org/ethics-virtual-school-counseling One of the presenters is Dr. Carolyn Stone, ASCA's ethics expert. If you regularly read her column in the journal, you will recognize some of her tips: always make a good faith effort to help students, follow your district's policy, and consult ethical standards. They also point out that our professional liability insurance through ASCA does cover telecounseling (if job-related).

ASCA has also created a FAQ page regarding school counseling ethics. If you have questions, check out https://www.schoolcounselor.org/school-counselors/legal-ethical/faqs-virtual-school-counseling-ethics
