Reasons to be concerned about "13 Reasons"

ASCA webinar describes show's risks

by Mark Veronica

This week's American School Counselor Association webinar about "13 Reasons Why," the popular show about a girl's struggle with suicide, raised several concerns:

  • the school counselor depicted in the show did not respond in an appropriate way
  • the show did not demonstrate best practices on suicide prevention
  • it "romanticizes" suicide
  • it misses opportunities for prevention
  • it portrays suicide as a solution
  • there was an absence of modeling help-seeking
  • it blames peers for her behavior
  • concerns for contagion or copy-cats
