Reasons to be concerned about "13 Reasons"
ASCA webinar describes show's risks
by Mark Veronica
This week's American School Counselor Association webinar about "13 Reasons Why," the popular show about a girl's struggle with suicide, raised several concerns:
- the school counselor depicted in the show did not respond in an appropriate way
- the show did not demonstrate best practices on suicide prevention
- it "romanticizes" suicide
- it misses opportunities for prevention
- it portrays suicide as a solution
- there was an absence of modeling help-seeking
- it blames peers for her behavior
- concerns for contagion or copy-cats
